Colmans chippy has been based at the top end of Ocean road and selling high quality fish and chips since way back in the 1920's (their first chippy was based in a hut on Shields beach in 1905) and over the last few years they have been winners of the chip shop of the year competition and many other awards including one from the BBC. Like the other chip shops in the street gone are the days when you used to walk in and walk out again with a fish that was cooked over an hour or more ago, these days when you enter the shop you need to place your order then join the queue as your fish is cooked fresh for you as you wait and believe me it tastes a lot better that way and is well worth the wait. For those that like to sit down and eat their fish & chips they have upgraded the indoor seating to make it into a very nice restaurant with a nautical theme that always seems busy when you pass. if your on a day trip to South Shields why not call in get yourself a portion of fish and chips then take it to the Marine Park or beach to eat which is only a short walk down the road. the only complaint I can have about the chippy and I suppose its a trivial moan is that I am a bit of a traditionalist and I like my fish in chips wrapped in newspaper not in a box lol.
